Most of the existing building stock has reached the age for renovation: 90% of the total stock was built before 1990 and over 75% of the total floor area of the existing stock can be attributed to residential buildings. Additionally, society is becoming more and more aware of the negative environmental impact of our living environments. In this combination lies a vast challenge; how to improve the performance of our building stock on such a scale?
The BIM-SPEED project aims to address this challenge by developing a combination of methodologies and tools with one central information source at its core: the Building Information Model (BIM), a digital representation of a building. This model will be the catalyst for a smarter, more efficient, method of deep renovation for the residential building sector. The BIM-SPEED project commenced on 29th of November 2018 with a kick-off meeting in Brussels, Belgium. The project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 under the call Building information modelling adapted to efficient renovation (Research and Innovation Action).

The project is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Timo Hartmann chair of the Department of Civil and Building Systems at TU Berlin, who will manage the consortium of scientists and experts participating in the project. The Department of Civil and Building Systems will work together with a multi-disciplinary consortium of architects, engineers, consultants, software developers and academics from SMEs, research organisations, higher education institutions, public bodies and non-profit organisations to provide all stakeholders in the housing renovation market with holistic solutions:
1. A cloud-based BIM platform that is open, affordable and user-friendly
2. A set of inter-operable BIM tools, existing and new ones, all connected through the BIM cloud platform
3. Validated and standardised procedures for BIM-based activities throughout the whole renovation process
BIM-SPEED solutions will be supported with evidence from 13 real demonstration cases that cover all Europe’s climatic geo-clusters and varying levels of BIM experience in different countries. The best practices will be shared across the EU through the umbrella organisations from all disciplines: Architects (AEC), HVAC engineers (REHVA), and construction firms (FIEC, EBC).
