Two new modules coming next in the summer semester 2018

Thursday, 29. March 2018

In this summer semester we will offer two new modules to the master students: ICE (Integrated Collaborative Engineering) and Complex Civil Energy Systems Design.

In the ICE module, the students will learn about the potential of ICE (Integrated Collaborative Engineering) to support integrated systems engineering. To this end, we will confront the students with a design challenge for a complex civil engineered product that they have to solve through intensive collaborative group work. In this way, this hands-on project-based module will provide the students with the possibility to experience collaborative engineering design in a simulated practical environment. The students will understand the real difficulties in model integration and learn techniques to overcome these problems through collaboration and concurrent work. An important focus of the course is to teach how to visualize engineering ideas in detail within media rich interdisciplinary workspaces (the class will be taught within the civil system group's ICE room).

In the Complex Energy Systems module, the students will learn the advanced systems engineering approaches in civil energy systems, in an applied way. This will allow them to gain an in depth understanding of how these approaches can help to solve the real world and societal engineering challenges. At the end of this module, the students will be able to apply system engineering methods to design the complex energy systems such as wind turbines, solar concentrators, storage technologies and sub-systems. To this end, we will provide them with a design challenge of complex energy system in multi-disciplinary manner, to evaluate the socio-technical performance through simulation experiments and life cycle management in terms of failure risks, costs and maintainability.
